Want to know more about invasive marine species, check out the Northland Regional Council - Pest Contol Hub Website http://www.nrc.govt.nz/pestcontrolhub. Well laid out, easy to follow, the site is full of relevant information about marine species that are beginning to show up on NZ shorelines. The photos and videos are brilliant and the information presented is easily understood by a variety of ages.
The species description focuses on external characteristics and habitat features - aspects that the average person can observe. The issue is well explained and the section on rules and control methods highlights what the community can do to help. The related links section I have also found very useful. Although the site was produced specifically for Northland, many of the marine species highlighted are found throughout the country.
The spread and impact of invasive species on the intertidal zone is an issue that school students and community groups can inform through long term monitoring of their local shoreline. Please get in touch with us at Mm2 if you need any support to get started.
